Can pre-operative treatment with intravenous bisphosphonates or cinacalcet have an effect on intra-operative parathyroid hormone measurements?

Wijewickrama Piyumi S A , Chung Teng-Teng , Abdel-Aziz Tarek E , Kurzawinski Tom R

Introduction: Primary hyperparathyroidism is a common endocrine disorder, surgery is curative. Patients with severe hypercalcemia receive cinacalcet or intravenous bisphosphonates as bridging. Intra-operative-parathyroid-hormone (IOPTH) measurement improves surgical accuracy. Bisphosphonates may increase PTH, while cinacalcet reduces it. The main aim was to assess the effect of zoledronate and cinacalcet on IOPTH.Method: Patients over 15-yo who underwent...

Background: Inappropriately high aldosterone in patients with primary hyperaldosteronism (PHA) is due to increased aldosterone synthase (CYP11B2) activity. Selective in vivo imaging of overexpressed CYP11B2 in adrenals with positron emission tomography (PET) has not yet been achieved due to close homology of enzymes involved in aldosterone and cortisol (CYP11B1) synthesis.Aim: Synthesize a fluorine-18 labelled highly selective CYP11B2 inhibitor,...

Introduction: The age of onset and severity of thyroid disease in MEN2 kindreds can be variable, resulting in wide intrafamilial heterogeneity, despite the same oncogenic driver RET pathogenic variant being present. Our study sought to investigate the RET kinomic landscape in MEN2 to discover new biomarkers and to provide further mechanistic insights into malignant disease progression, focussing on paediatric cases.Metho...
